Welcome to the blog.

  1. First of all, I love the idea of separating evaluator profiles from their feedback – great idea! Ms. Haggard’s comments on the scheduling of the program is interesting in that the school I work for is going through some of the same issues with ambitious scheduling. It seems to be rather difficult to find a balance between what is required in the learning and student schedules, and her suggestion is quite valid. What are your thoughts on the unpaid internship she mentioned?

I also had some interest in Dr. Gregory’s comments on the roadmap that needs to be outlined in the student experience. This was a great help to me a number of years ago when I was responsible for coordinating student externships (volunteer experience that was included as a course). It made things much easier for both myself and the students to have a clear picture of where they were going and what they were doing.

  2. Hi Dan,

We really liked the unpaid internship idea. We thought it would align better with the job search workshop at the end. From my experience, there isn't always a lot of difference between the two but the title sounds must more professional for a resume. Much like your usage of student externships. We were really pleased with the feedback we got and it was nice to hear we were on the right path!

  3. Mike, Spencer, Janice, Kristen and Laura,

I like the following comments from two professionals:

She especially liked the idea of hiring managers leading the workshops because students listen better to them because they are the ones that will be hiring them in the field.

Gregory strongly recommended having a “roadmap” outlined in their experience.

    She suggested the students do

their own research on the agency before choosing to volunteer there
She also suggested more information should be gathered about expectations of the volunteer

    experience.

She stated “Don't just drop these students on the agencies

without advance planning of the tasks they will perform and with a degree of skill.” Gregory also

liked the journal aspect of the project, but thinks it should be weekly so the students can reflect on the

week to see what they can do differently.

    Suggestions:

    1. Please change Reflection to Students’ Responses and add Group Reflection. Please add two professionals’ original evaluation documents.

    2. Please indicate your roles.

    3. Please check your APA format:

    "Service learning

provides an additional means for reaching educational objectives…" (Bringle & Hatcher, 1996).

    Check APA about headings/subheadings

Please revise the APA format on your References

  4. Group 1,

Good work! I'm glad that you received valuable feedback from both professionals.

I agree with Ms. Haggard that having hiring managers involved with the program is a great idea. When given the same advice from professors and those in industry, students tend to listen more to those in industry. In my current job, I help students with their internship searches. I can't tell you how many times a student has repeated advice from a recruiter and told me, "Isn't that great advice, Miss Warrner?" It's usually advice I have given the same student each semester for two years.

I like Dr. Gregory’s idea to have the students thoroughly research the volunteer organization. Students will be more invested in the volunteering if the organization is of genuine interest to them.

    Good work, group 1!

    Thanks,

    Jen
